I spent many evenings in my childhood summers fishing from an old wooden boat. It was amazing getting to retry an activity I loved doing as a child. Having said that, what I did was a very different style of fishing, which proved to be a bigger challenge than I thought! My family owned a Canadian canoe so canoeing was another activity I loved doing growing up. Getting to try kayaking in the canals and under the bridges of a huge metropolis like Tokyo was an unreal experience. I thought I knew Tokyo well, but I got to see a side of Tokyo that I had never seen before.
子どもの頃、夏になると古い木のボートに乗って夕方まで釣りをしていた思い出がたくさんあります。そんな大好きだったアクティビティをもう一度体験できて、とても嬉しかったです！…とはいえ、今回の釣りはこれまでとは全然違うスタイルで、思っていた以上にチャレンジングでした。 実は家にカナディアンカヌーもあったので、カヌーも子どもの頃から大好きなアクティビティのひとつ。だからこそ、大都市・東京の運河や橋の下をカヤックで進む体験は本当に現実とは思えないほど特別でした。東京のことはよく知っているつもりでしたが、まだ見たことのない表情があるんだと気づかされた瞬間でした。

This was the first episode we shot knowing we were going to be doing a full series of Getting Dirty in Japan. I remember how excited I felt arriving at our first location and thinking that this was going to be the start of a big adventure. Though fishing is not my idea of a good time, I was so touched by the atmosphere, the kindness of the staff, and the friendly customers. It was a great experience. Night kayak in Tokyo? Amazing. Waiting in the cold for your friend to finish the night kayak tour? Super cold! Make sure you pick the right season to do this if you have people not joining the tour.
このエピソードは、「Getting Dirty in Japan」をシリーズとして本格的にやっていくと決まってから最初に撮影した回でした。最初のロケ地に到着したときのワクワク感は今でも覚えています。「ここから大きな冒険が始まるんだ！」って思ったんです。正直、釣りは自分の中で“最高の遊び”というタイプではないのですが（笑）、現場の雰囲気やスタッフの皆さんの優しさ、そして常連のお客さんたちのフレンドリーさにすごく心を打たれました。本当に素敵な体験でした。 そしてその後は、まさかの東京でナイトカヤック！最高でした。…でも、友達がツアーを終えるのを寒い中で待つのは本当に凍えるレベル（笑）。もしツアーに参加しない人がいるなら、季節選びはかなり大事ですよ！
